Gynecology Q & A

What is gynecology?

Gynecology is the medical and surgical specialty focused on the care of a woman’s health and wellness. At Physicians for Women, the team provides expert clinical gynecological care, including preventative primary care as well as the diagnosis and treatment of gynecological problems.

We treat conditions related to your pelvis, including your uterus and cervix, ovaries, vagina and bladder.. Our in-office ultrasound and lab may be used to diagnose and assist in tailoring the right treatment for you. Minor gynecologic problems can often be remedied in the comfort and privacy of our in-office procedure room.

What does gynecology care involve?

One of the most important parts of gynecology care is the annual examination or well-woman visit. It is a time to evaluate your general overall health, identify risks and allow you to ask questions and address concerns.

Between these visits, you may need to see us for other reasons. The board-certified gynecologists at Physicians for Women often address:

  • Infertility or concerns about conceiving
  • Birth control/Family planning
  • Endometriosis
  • Ovulation disorders
  • STD testing and treatment
  • Irregular or heavy periods
  • Menopausal symptoms and associated problems like postmenopausal bleeding and dyspareunia (painful intercourse)
  • Acute and chronic pelvic pain
  • Abnormal pap smears or cervical dysplasia
  • Urinary incontinence
  • Uterine fibroids

What are some common gynecological conditions?

At Physicians for Women, the team provides treatment and management for many common gynecological conditions and their symptoms. Conditions include:

Endometriosis

Endometriosis is a painful condition affecting the endometrium or uterine lining. It develops when the endometrium grows outside of the uterus.

Abnormal uterine bleeding

Abnormal uterine bleeding might be a heavy flow, frequent or infrequent periods, or bleeding between periods. It can occur because of a hormone imbalance, an infection or the presence of endometriosis, fibroids or polyps or rarely cancer.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)

PCOS is another hormonal condition. Imbalances can lead to the development of fluid-filled cysts and cease ovulation.

Pelvic floor conditions

Gynecologists treat pelvic floor and muscle conditions like urinary incontinence, bowel problems, and more.
